There were giggles, squeals and whoops of pain as runners wobbled away from the starting line Sunday on the main roadway into Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole.
When the race had been run, the first annual "Healing in Heels" Dash for Breast Cancer raised about $3,000 to benefit the Anne Arundel Medical Center Breast Center. Nearly 100 runners had registered for the charity event, which was sponsored by Charm City Run, a running supplies store at Annapolis Towne Centre.
A half-hour before race time, an open parking lot began filling up with contestants and onlookers. At a booth hosted by Save The Coconuts, a nonprofit group that raises money to fight breast cancer, Louise Nielsen of Pasadena flashed her running gear: a pair of sparkly sky-high-heeled silver reptile gladiator sandals with a dozen buckled strips strapped to just below her kneecap.
"My stage 3 breast cancer went into remission a year ago," she said as she tied on a grass skirt to accent her footwear.
