Otago beauties - Food - Yahoo! New Zealand Food
Central Otago is a spectacular canvas for growing grapes. Vineyards are beautifully dotted over a dramatic glacial landscape with aquamarine lakes and rivers, and steep mountain ranges with their jagged edges.
And this place produces many fabulous, delicious, sumptuous Pinot Noirs as well as delicately fragrant white wines. You could spend weeks sampling, eating and absorbing the beautiful surroundings.
You can visit any time of the year, as the region puts on a different face with the changing of the seasons. You can do your own thing – hire a car and visit cellar doors at your leisure. Or be part of an organised tour.
But here's one gratifying way to immerse yourself with the region's wine and food - attend the Central Otago Pinot Noir Celebration ( pinotcelebration.co.nz ) to be held in January 2012. As the name suggests, it's about Pinot Noir, and plenty of them, including older wines and a selection of exceptional Burgundies. It is an outrageously good time.
