Foreign exchange students settle in at Hinsdale South
When the new school year began, two Hinsdale South students did far more than pack their backpacks and get on a bus.
Leticia Paixao of Brazil and Tanaporn Suwanchaiyong of Thailand will spend the entire school year as members of the senior class at Hinsdale South.
“My dream was to come here,” said 16-year-old Paixao.
And one month into her stay, it already has been more than she imagined, Paixao said. A bubbly, talkative teen, Paixao said she wants to experience every aspect of being an American teenager. And that includes homecoming.
“It was my dream to go to Macy’s,” said Paixao.
Her host mother, Grace Phillips of Darien, was more than happy to make that dream come true as she accompanied Paixao on a quest for her homecoming dress.
“I’ve been the lone ranger for a long time,” Grace Phillips said. As the mother of five grown boys, there was never a need to shop for things such as homecoming dresses and prom gowns.

During homecoming week Oct. 3-8, students showed their school spirit by participating in dress-up days. Diapers to Dentures Day had underclassmen dressed in their infantile finest while upperclassmen prepared for their golden years.
