'Nutcracker' continues holiday traditions at the Paramount

At this point in its local history, "The Nutcracker" has become an heirloom show.

It's a production that raises Abilene's young ballet dancers from toddlers to teenagers, helping them to gain skill and responsibility with each passing year.

This year's cast is filled with performers such as 17-year-old Emily Roberts, a dancer in the show since she was 5. In her early years, Emily and her cohorts would speak in hushed, reverential tones about their teenage castmates, the ones who danced the lead roles: "the big girls."

"When you're little, you look at the big girls and try to be like them," said Emily, who is one of two performers portraying the role of the Snow Queen. "Now, we're the big girls."

Nearing the end of her run with Abilene Ballet Theatre, Emily said she hopes to serve as a role model to the little ones who are playing mischievous mice or tiny snow angels in this year's production. Some day, one of them will fill her ballet slippers.
