Father have mercy on me: Hardus Lotter uttered these words as he knelt in his sister’s bedroom after failing to kill his mother and watching his sister complete the murder of their parent.
He then went to kill his father.
Hardus, 23, who is on trial with his sister, Nicolette, 29, and her ex-boyfriend Mathew Naidoo, 25, is the first of the two Lotter children to take the stand in a trial that has appalled South Africa. According to one expert, this is the first time two children have been tried for killing their parents, in this case school teacher Magdalena, 52, and businessman Johannes Lotter, 53.
The siblings have pleaded not guilty to the murders of their parents which took place at the Lotter home in Westville in July 2008.
Naidoo has also pleaded not guilty, claiming he had had nothing to do with the crime.
