In the years before the Bicentennial, according to a description in the $35 auction catalog (also accessible, but with some background material omitted, at www.freemansauction.com ), Wolgin, a developer of such Center City landmarks as the Rittenhouse Hotel and condominiums, hoped to commission a large sculpture for his Centre Square project.
At the same time, Oldenburg had become fascinated with the clothespin because of its structural elements - components, he once noted, held in embrace by a spring. (Let us not get into symbolism such as marriage.) Before the final effort, Oldenburg and collaborator Don Lippincott made three 10-foot clothespins and nine 4-foot models, of which Wolgin's is the seventh. It has a presale price estimate of $250,000 to $350,000.
