Customer Reviews:
  1. Some Fascinating Stuff
I heard this author speak on NPR years ago, and at the time his book had not been published. I waited for years, and when I finally found it I was not disappointed. He made me think about night and how it affected the people in the early Middle Ages in ways I never had before. Well researched and...
  2. An interesting subject, but a bit of a slog
The book is well researched: that said, it is not that fun a read. It's rather funny that a book about the development of nightlife keeps putting me to sleep. I thought the book would be less scholarly, I am a bit disappointed.

Making history: Avoca cruises past Romulus in first home sectional game in ...

The scoreboard froze with 29:36 remaining in the second half, forcing a brief halt to Monday’s Section V, Class DD playoff opener between No. 7 Avoca and No. 10 Romulus.

That was the only thing that could stop the Tigers offense.

The Tigers tacked on three more goals after the short respite, cruising to a historic 7-1 victory in Avoca’s first home sectional game in over a quarter century.

“It’s just a great win overall for the Avoca school, the community, the student-athletes,” Avoca head coach Scott Carroll said. “This is a paradigm shift. This is the first home sectional game in over 25 years. To get a win is even sweeter. I’m just really excited for the kids. That’s what we’re here for.”

The Tigers scored two goals in the final 1:51 of the first half to take a commanding 4-1 lead into the intermission.

Romulus keeper Timmy Nicholson had no shot at getting a hand on a perfectly-placed penalty kick off the foot of Matt Fox, making it 3-1 with just under two minutes left in the half.

Evening Program: Tues. 1 Nov., 7:30 PM – A Century of Change in ...

In an area of great bird diversity has resulted in dramatic changes over the last century in bird populations in the Los Angeles region. Some species have disappeared, others have thrived, and still others have moved in from elsewhere (with or without direct help from humans). This talk will look at some of these changes and explore the ways we learn about shifting bird populations, from museum collections to massive databases such as eBird.

Kimball Garrett has been the Ornithology Collections Manager at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County since 1982.  He has been birding in the Los Angeles region for almost half of the last century of change, and is the co-author of “Birds of The Los Angeles Region” and the long out-of-print “Birds of Southern California: Status and Distribution.”

Two-Night Stay For Two At Captain Grant's, 1754 In Connecticut

Two-Night Stay For Two At Captain Grant’s, 1754 In Connecticut

Guests Hear Otherworldly Whispers at 18th-Century Inn

Before he died at sea, captain William Gonzales Grant erected a palatial manor in 1754 in the woods of southeastern Connecticut for his wife, Mercy Adelaide Avery. Over the next two centuries, family, Revolutionary War soldiers, and Civil War runaway slaves set up camp in the estate. With such history, Captain Grant’s, 1754 abounds with ghost-spotting potential, as guests say they’ve heard whispering voices during evening hours. During an included ghost-communication lesson, inn staff members help guests to connect with paranormal residents and give tips on how to speak to those beyond the grave.

Restored to their original states, the guest rooms exude charm through centuries-old décor and full private bathrooms. The Adelaide room features 1800s Gothic furniture, and the Elizabeth room, named after the last woman to reside at the property, is blanketed in hardwood floors crafted from now-extinct hard-heart pine. Inn staff provides firewood for the Margaret room’s marble and mahogany fireplace and the Holly room’s reproduction of an 18th-century hearth.
