Superted's beads will boost courage

Basildon Hospital is offering a morale-boosting new scheme to poorly children, thanks to the parents of a Wickford boy known as Superted.

John and Sarah Drummond, the parents of Ted Drummond, known as Superted because of his bravery, have helped bring the Beads of Courage programme from America to the UK.

The scheme aims to help youngsters come to terms with their illnesses and starts with children diagnosed with cancer being given a length of string with beads that spell out their name.

Every time they undergo a procedure such as an operation, injection, X-ray, or bout of chemotherapy, they receive a glass bead to add to their colourful chain.

Ted, four, of Park Close, Wickford, has already received his beads – 1,769, in all – due to the countless operations and procedures he has had to endure since he was six months old.

Basildon Hospital has now signed up to the scheme.

Ted’s mum Sarah, 36, explained: “White is for chemo, black for injections, white with love hearts represents every time he’s been in A&E, and other colours are for hair loss, stays in hospital and painful procedures.

These cuff-beads were wound from Italian glass. All my beads are annealed overnight in a digitally controlled kiln, for maximum strength and durability.

My handmade glass lampwork beads are happily made by me, Davinia Smet, in my shop in the heart of Venice, Italy. Grey Polka Dots Cufflinks:

These cufflinks are made with glass Cabochons. The beads have a Grey round shaped base, with White Polka Dots. The cuff is Titanium plated. Measures approx. 18mm and has a twist-able base. These lovely earrings are composed of beautiful 12x15mm handmade lampwork beads.

The lampwork beads are a gorgeous rich red. Sterling silver bead-caps, head pins, and earring wires complete these beautiful earrings.

These earrings are 3,4cm (1.33 inches)  long measured from the top arch of the sterling silver earring wires.
